Tottenham Hotspur wrapped up the 2024/25 campaign on a positive note by winning the UEFA Europa League, sealing a return to Champions League football for the first time in three years.
It was a significant accomplishment for Ange Postecoglou and his squad, but it doesn't cover up what was a disappointing domestic season. Spurs ended the Premier League campaign in 17th place a result far below expectations. Without their success in Europe, Postecoglou’s position might have come under serious threat much earlier.
Now, changes are expected in the squad as the club looks to bounce back from their Premier League struggles. A few important players may be on their way out despite Champions League qualification, which may not be enough to keep everyone at the club.
One of those key names facing an uncertain future is their star central defender Cristian Romero. Reports suggest Atletico Madrid are eager to bring him to the Wanda Metropolitano, with discussions already taking place between the player and Diego Simeone. The Spanish giants are pushing to secure his services as they look to strengthen their backline.
Despite an injury-hit season, the Argentine defender delivered a masterclass in the Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao, showcasing his toughness, leadership, and defensive quality. That performance only reinforced his value, and Atletico have made him a priority signing ahead of the summer window. Their CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, is expected to lead the negotiations with Spurs.
According to Spurs insider and Lilywhite Rose podcast host John Wenham, the situation is at a crossroads. The North London club will either tie their defensive leader down with a new contract or part ways with him in the coming months.
“He was immense in the final against Man United arguably the best player on the pitch,” Wenham said in an interview with Tottenham News. “He’s settled in London with his family and has a strong support network at the club. Champions League qualification might just be the leverage Spurs need to keep him.”
“Still, he only has two years left on his current deal, so something has to give this summer either he renews or he’s sold.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also reports that chairman Daniel Levy is determined to keep the defender and wants to open contract talks to secure his future at the club for at least another season.
With Champions League football back on the table, Spurs are in a decent position to convince him to stay. But if he remains set on joining Atletico, Tottenham may have no choice but to negotiate. Either way, the club needs to be proactive and line up a suitable replacement in case he departs in the coming window.
